How To Use Frankincense Oil
Frankincense essential oil is versatile but potent. Like all essential oils, it requires proper dilution and mindful application. This guide covers the primary methods of use, recommended dilution ratios, and key safety considerations.
Topical Application
Frankincense oil should always be diluted in a carrier oil before applying to the skin. Common carrier oils include jojoba, sweet almond, coconut, and argan oil.
Recommended Dilution Ratios
- ◆ Face / sensitive areas: 0.5-1% (1-2 drops per tablespoon of carrier oil)
- ◆ Body application: 2-3% (4-6 drops per tablespoon of carrier oil)
- ◆ Targeted spot treatment: Up to 5% (10 drops per tablespoon, short-term use)
Apply the diluted blend to the desired area and massage gently. For facial skincare, frankincense oil can be added to your existing moisturizer or serum. Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin 24 hours before broader application.
Aromatherapy & Diffusing
Add 3-5 drops of frankincense oil to an ultrasonic or nebulizing diffuser. Diffuse for 30-60 minutes at a time in a well-ventilated room. Frankincense blends well with lavender, sandalwood, bergamot, orange, myrrh, and cedarwood.
For meditation or focused relaxation, frankincense can also be inhaled directly from the bottle or from a drop placed on a tissue. The warm, resinous aroma has been used to support contemplative practice for thousands of years.
Bath & Body
Add 4-6 drops of frankincense oil to a tablespoon of carrier oil or unscented bath salts before adding to bath water. Essential oils do not dissolve in water on their own and can cause skin irritation if added directly to a bath without a dispersant.
Safety Considerations
- ◆ Pregnancy and nursing: Consult a healthcare provider before using any essential oil during pregnancy or while nursing.
- ◆ Children: Use lower dilution ratios (0.5-1%) for children over 6. Avoid use on infants and toddlers without professional guidance.
- ◆ Internal use: The Frankincense Oil Institute does not recommend internal consumption of essential oils without the direct supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.
- ◆ Medication interactions: Boswellic acids may interact with anti-inflammatory and blood-thinning medications. Consult your doctor if you take prescription medication.
- ◆ Storage: Store in a cool, dark place in tightly sealed dark glass bottles. Properly stored frankincense oil can maintain its potency for 3-5 years.
Quality Matters
The effectiveness and safety of frankincense oil depends heavily on its quality. Look for oils that are 100% pure, steam-distilled, and ideally backed by GC/MS testing. Learn more about what to look for in our quality standards guide, or find trusted retailers through our vetted partner network.
